Lowes Begins Hiring for Sierra Vista Store

Cochise County Workforce Development (CCWD) received recognition last night from the Sierra Vista Economic Development Foundation for economic development contributions to Sierra Vista.

Businesses wanting to relocate to Sierra Vista are looking for a strong work force that will meet their investment needs. And it is vitally important the area continues to produce skilled employees, which will be strengthened by the efforts of agencies such as Cochise County Workforce Development, according to the executive director and CEO of the Sierra Vista Economic Development Foundation Barry Albrecht.

Over 600 jobs seekers and 60 employers participated in CCWD’s Career Fair held at The Windemere Hotel yesterday.

New tax credit for Helth Insurance

Small-business owners who do not already offer employee health insurance now may qualify for financial assistance to provide coverage through a new tax-credit program.

Businesses with two to 25 employees and individual workers at small and large companies may apply for the tax credit through the state Department of Revenue.

Under the program, which was passed by the state Legislature this year and went into effect Sept. 21, business owners may receive up to $1,000 or 50 percent off, whichever is less, of each employee's annual insurance premium. They also may receive up to $3,000 or 50 percent off for employees who want family coverage.

13.4% drop seen in median home price by '08

"Tucson's median housing price is projected to drop by more than 13 percent by the second quarter of 2008, according to a forecast by Moody's Economy.com.

"The forecast by Moody's Economy.com, a private research firm, presents one of the starkest views yet of the housing slowdown that has been gathering force in recent months" according to the Arizona Daily Star.

"Tucson will see the eighth-largest price decline, of 13.4 percent, out of 133 metropolitan areas included in the study. According to the survey, Tucson reached its peak in the first quarter of this year and will bottom out in second-quarter of 2008."

State Expects Payroll Jobs to Grow 4 1/2%

Arizona’s economy is projected to grow at a faster rate than the nation in 2006 and 2007, according to the forecast update of the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES), Research Administration (RA). Nonfarm jobs in the Grand Canyon state are forecast to increase at a rate of 4.9 percent in 2006 and then slow to 4 percent in 2007. Over the two-year period, nonfarm job growth is projected to add nearly 228,000 jobs in Arizona. Meanwhile, according to the most recent figures by Global Insight, the U.S. economy is forecast to have a slower pace of employment expansion, growing at a rate of 1.4 percent in 2006 and 1.1 percent in 2007.

State Gains 35,600 Seasonally Expected Jobs in August

Arizona’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.6% in August. This represents more than a full percentage point decrease from July’s figure of 4.7%. At the national level, the August adjusted unemployment rate was 4.7%, down one-tenth of a percentage point from July.

Arizona’s economy experienced a seasonally expected gain of 35,600 nonfarm jobs during the month of Au-gust, largely due to the beginning of a new academic year. Goods-producing industries accounted for nearly 17 percent of total nonfarm employment, while service-providing industries accounted for approximately 83 percent. Nearly 70 percent of the monthly increase occurred in government, while private industries (+10,700) accounted for just over 30 percent. Since August 2005, Arizona has added 115,900 jobs, which represents 12-month growth of 4.6 percent.

The adjusted unemployment rate in Cochise County fell from 5.2% in July to 3.8% in August
